Dear All,

It has been some time since I ran a postal meet and now is as good of a time as ever.

Event: Category I Featherette Postal Meet
When: January 1st 2003 to March 31st 2003

The Featherette is an unbraced Class B indoor monoplane that was kitted by the California Model Company back in the 1950's. The wingspan is approx 18" (60 sq inches) and the length of the model is approximately 17", it is microfilm covered, and has an 'X' spar prop.

A copy of the plan can be purchased from D. Heinrich Ind.
3154 Falcon St
Pomona, CA 91767
http://www.freeflightmodels.com/pages/aerodyneproducts/modern_glider_and_rubber.htm

It is plan #AD2031 and is $3.00 per copy and $3.00 for postage. Because of copyright laws, a free copy of this plan will not be available on my website so please purchase a copy and help support a fellow modeler's cottage industry.

The Rules:

Years ago at the USIC there use to be an event called AJI Indoor Oldtimer. This event allowed you to build replica models of the indoor models which were published in the Zaic yearbooks back in the 1930's and 1940's. This event was quite enjoyable an unfortunately it only lasted 2 years. The intent of this Featherette postal is to revive the oltimer event and limit it to a specific popular oltimer model which was kitted and flown in the 1950's. The intent of the event is to build a replica of this model as close to the original published plans as possible. The following are rules and clarifications to help you get the model built.

1. The wing, stab, and rudder outlines must be built per the plan. No changes in the outline shape are permitted. The wing, stab, and rudder must have the same number of ribs as shown on the plan, and the ribs must be built in the same location as shown on the plan. The airfoil must be per the plan as well.

2. The wing and fuselage are to be unbraced, as per the plan. No boron or kevlar reinforcements or the like permitted.

3. The fuselage and tail boom are to be the same length as per the plan. The tail boom may be a rolled tube instead of solid piece of wood.

4. Any size wood and wire may be used, and tissue tube wing sockets may be used in lieu of the balsa ones shown on the plan.

5. Dihedral amount and type per the plan, as well as wing offset amount and method per the plan.

6. Must use an  'X' spar prop as shown on the plan. 10 1/8" max diameter. The pitch may be changed and the outline may be symmetrical (as per the plan) or flaring as shown in the sketch at the bottom of the plan. No single spar prop types permitted.

7. A double thrust bearing may be substituted for the single thrust bearing shown on the plan.

8. Timing is the best 1 of 3 flights. 30 seconds for an official. Only 3 official flights may be made per flying session. If you do not like your flight time, then you may enter as often as you wish. The 3 flight limit per flying session is to give a contest like atmosphere, and requiring you to choose when to make an official. The 3 flight limit is how many flights you were allowed in the old days, so the 3 flights format will be. So if you make 3 official flights at one flying session, the you are done for that day, but you can fly 3 more official flights at your next flying session and enter those times as well (if they are better). You may not time your own flights.

9.  No weight limit, and no restrictions on rubber. Steering is permitted.

10. The original model was covered with microfilm, but Y2K2 or any other type of covering is permitted.

11.  The mounting location of the wing onto the body is not specified, so the wing may be mounted anywhere as needed to get your model to balance. Wingpost heights are to be per the plan and can not be changed (e.g. no stork type models). Wing incidence, tail incidence, rudder offset, tail tilt, washin, washout, sidethrust, and downthrust are all up to your trimming techniques and will not be governed.

12. The single strand motor and landing gear mentioned in the lower right hand portion of the plan are not required.

13. For this postal, all flights are limited to Cat I flying sites (8 meters) 26' 3" or less. Once a fudge factor can be figured out for this model we can allow higher ceilings for the next postal.
